Welcome to Year 5!
Year 5 is a challenging and exciting year in which all the children work hard to fulfil the Year 5 expectations whilst also enjoying a wide variety of learning opportunities.
In English, it is important for the children to engage with many different fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts. We place a strong emphasis on spelling and grammar skills which are consolidated throughout the year. Furthermore, we use a cross-curricular approach as stimulus for our writing.
The four mathematical operations will be reinforced throughout the year through logical reasoning and problem solving activities. These strong foundations are essential for the children's progress in fractions, decimals and percentages. In geometry, the children analyse the properties of shapes including volume and capacity. They consolidate their understanding of perimeter and area and also learn about position and direction. Time, money and measurement conversions are also a strong focus.
In Science, the children investigate the world around them and develop their skills as scientists. We learn about the properties of materials and how they are used in our environment. We start the year studying the Solar System. We will also be exploring forces such as gravity, air and water resistance and friction; culminating in the children creating their own machine. As Spring comes around, we will then learn about life cycles and plants. In the Summer we will learn about human growth and famous naturalists such as Sir David Attenborough.
We take a cross-curricular focus in our foundation subjects; using our Enquiry topic as a stimulus in Art, DT and Computing. The children will become local geographers; investigating rivers and mountains, local geography and looking further afield to the Mayans. Through our enquiry lessons we will be learning about World War 1, Saxons and Vikings and the Mayan civilisation.
As always, feel free to pop in and talk to me at the end of the school day. I am very happy to discuss any queries or arrange a meeting.
